PR
Public relations is about your reputation.
Your product, your service, your customer care, every communication that you write affects the reputation of your company. Public Relations professionals exist to maintain a good reputation for their clients. It goes without saying that if your company or product has a good reputation you really do not need to protect it.
PR is very effective and it’s FREE. You do not need to pay an expensive PR consultant if you are a small business.
Writing an effective press release that makes it into the newspapre or onto the radio is easy when you know the basics. Here are some tips to help.
1. Remember you are aiming your story at the journalist. Journalists receive hundreds of stories a day from businesses. Most stories get thrown in the bin because they’re boring. The journalist needs stories of interest and of use to the readers. Be creative. You need to get the journalist’s attention and he wants stories that will attract readers. Think about his needs.
2. Think about the readers of the paper or magazine or the listeners of the radio station. Find a funny, interesting, controversial or exciting angle that will catch their interest – something people will talk about or laugh about or gain something from.
3. The headline is the most important part. Make sure it is attention grabbing and newsworthy.
4. Read the paper that you are writing too. Listen to the radio station. Find out what type of stories they are publishing, how long they are and what tone they use. A newspaper, for example, will be looking for a different type of story than a trade magazine.
5. Keep your story short. Keep to the facts and do not use flowery language but make sure you include all the relevant information, contact details and facts.
6. Always put your contact details clearly on the bottom so that the journalist can call if they need further information.
